Dr Vorhees posted elsewhere a link to an incredible recording. Now, I love Stevie Wonder, and “Talking Book” is pretty much one of the perfect albums. If you were to be charged with the task of assembling ten albums human beings have made since the inception of recorded music, “Talking Book” would at least enter consideration without question. But that’s another blog altogether. Probably a long one. For Dr Vorhees to address, too.
I have always had a respect for Mel Tormé. He’s got a great voice, he was on Night Court, and he has a great sense of humor. But I never realized just how great ’til i listened to this recording. Seriously, give a listen. I’ll wait.
HOLY BEJEESUS. The phrasing, the pitch control, the range, the dynamics. And that band! And the arrangement!
I did the research for you. It’s on the 1978 album Live at the Maisonette.” I just picked up off of iTunes myself.
